For most people, the first memories that come to mind, revolve around their family home. This is certainly the case for Josh Ward-Goldsack, the founder of Monarch Construction. Thinking about his childhood, Josh remembers, “Whenever I had spare time, I’d be tinkering with Dad’s tools. Pulling things apart. Trying to see how they worked. And attempting to fix them. Some people go their whole lives looking for a career. I always knew I wanted to be in construction and ultimately become a builder."

From Natural Interest To Formal Training

Josh’s passion for building only grew during high school when he started a school-based apprenticeship in carpentry. But unlike his peers who focussed on one skill, Josh dedicated 2 days a week learning a variety of building skills including labouring, landscaping, concreting, and anything that was happening on site.

“I loved being onsite,” says Josh. “Learning by doing and creating rather than sitting behind a desk.”
